How Did We Get Here?
Abandoning our Van in Africa bit.ly/2Kff0HT
After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! This is going to be our 3rd time converting an empty cargo van into a campervan and we are both excited and nervous to take on this project. We want this build to be the ULTIMATE OFF-GRID VAN ๐Ÿš
Tour the renovations we've done to our self converted sprinter van:

Our goal here is to inspire you to chase after your own dreams however big (or small... tiny homes anyone?) they may be! We hope to create a community of like-minded, positive individuals who will grow to love and support one another on their own journeys.

This weekโ€™s ep. was so good I just watched it through TWICE and it still made me laugh out loud again ๐Ÿ˜‚ I love Bob, I love Eamonโ€™s dancing, I love Bec being a #badass errand gal, I LOVED the music and the transitions (so good guys, honestly), and I loved that no matter how frustrating everything got, you guys stayed positive! Such an inspiration. Keep it up, already canโ€™t wait for next week!!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜

It took almost a week to get to watch this weeks episode, man alive you've got some great friends and your positive attitude is inspirational. Enjoy the lye in when you get chance to grab one Eamon, but I don't think errand girl is going to allow you one anytime soon.

With a vsr you can run a cable from the RV to the vsr then to the back batteries. The job of the vsr is when the main battery reaches 13.8v it switches over to start charging the back batteries.

600 AH is hardly the most powerful off-grid set up. Volta regularly allows for in excess of 12,000 watt set ups. Its nice though

FYI: One of the reasons why soldered cable connections are illegal in europe: if you have a bad connection or an overcurrent situation the connection heats up and desolderes itself, which can end in shorts, arcs and fire.

with your solderin joints, you should not put in the cold wires and stop heating immediately (as seen on 9:55). Also the cable has to come to temperature to form a solid soldering joint. Otherwise you might end up with a "cold solder joint" which might be really risky specially at that high currents and in a van where there are a lot of vibrations ...

Hey Guys, you won't see this comment, but I am concerned with your setup. Three is a lack of fusing on the busbar, the busbar looks undersized for the loads and your 12v alternator charging plan leaves something to be desired. We are the company that did the Tesla install into Holland Roden's van (Hollandays!) and I would be happy to review and suggest if you still feel like you need it!

He Bec, how about Cheap LAND? Off-Grid living? Need a permanent and "go to" very safe "base camp"? We have 2 parcels that are perfect for off-grid living. Perfect! Have you considered some cheap land for Off-Grid living in Arizona? How about $99 down and $299 per month? My wife and I have 2 parcels for sale and both parcels are very easy to get to. Major Paved road most of the way, but then a dirt road on the final few miles. These are "Cowboy weather" parcels at about the +/- 5,500-foot level "Rabbit, Deer & Pronghorn" country. Not too cold winters, and not too warm summers -- the weather bounces between 40F degrees and 85F degrees during the year. The first parcel is 1.05 acres of land located about 40 minutes from Flagstaff Arizona in Coconino county in an area called "Grand Canyon Junction". The second parcel is more off the beaten path. It is located between the towns of Show Low Arizona and St Johns Arizona. It is 4.9 acres and it is in Apache county. We are selling both parcels. Buy one or buy both, take your pick. No credit check, no interest, just $99 down and $299 per month for 4 years. You can pay your parcel off at any time. (We pay the property taxes during the 4 years. Taxes are low, about $70 per year). Drop me a note: tregloyden8 at gmail

Yeah. Crimping is much better. Soldering will crack if the joint gets hot. Then you have a fire hazard.

Your content is great, lots of things to learn and understand. Great job, thank you ! As an "image guy", I'd highly suggest you to film all close-up sequences with your AF system off. I don't know which camera you use (probably a Panasonic or Canon), but the autofocus system doesn't work like you'd want it to. Exemple : 1:34 background is sharp, you are blur. When you hold your camera at arm's length and film yourself, there's no need for any kind of AF : both camera and subject remain at equal distance. So, locking your camera in manual focus mode shall guarantee you'll get sharp images 100% of the time. Unless you want to frame something else, but you seem quite good at montage so editing sequences should make no problem for you. And some cameras allow manual focus with AF "assistance" just with touching a button. Would be very helpful in your case, but I can't know whether yours features this convenient function.

I think I've got you beat , my rig is very small 26 square feet with a 24 volt system , running a 24 volt freezer ( drawing only 1.5 amps ) a 24 to 12 volt converter a 250 , and 2500 watt inverters I also have 680 watts of solar . I built mine so I can run saws , drills , misc. carpenter tools . Etc. I prefer a 24 over 12 volt system for several reasons .

For extra protection they could've cover the exposed knotts and bolts from the battery with liquid plastic.

Can I ask why Victron over Renogy and did you need the 5000 Watt or do you think a 3000 watt would have worked as well. I am just about to install a similar setup but only went with the 3000 Watt. I'm considering Renogy because of the lower price in Canada ($1000 difference)

No snoozin' here! In fact, I wouldn't have minded seeing MORE electrical. I plan to do some for my RV. Biggest challenge in my build will probably be how others view what I'm capable of because I'm a girl and what they're willing to teach me. So I often go to US-first to learn. Kinda disappointing seeing the stereotypes here too. Huge fan of you guys, but not a fan of that remark, and I hope the mistake is recognized ๐Ÿ™‚

Eamon was right to check the wire sizes !!!! There was another remedy, which I am using for our system, inspired by you guys in general if not specifically. If the electrical system were configured at 24V instead of 12V, you could have used half the size of wire. Most things in a van can run at 24V and if you need 12V or any other voltage, then a voltage converter is an adaptation for various other loads at any other voltage. For instance, inverters, fridges, compressors and other heavier loads will run at 24V. This is efficient and saves wire. The way to set up a 24V battery bank in this case is to run not all six Battleborn units in parallel, but to link two parallel groups of three in series. This cuts the amps in half and doubles the voltage. Performance would be the same, if not improved. It also matches the higher voltage produced by a massive bank of solar panels, given the solar controller you have. Anyway, loved the adventure, as usual!
